Bowel movement tracker
thumbnail2 2
OVERVIEW
Project Overview This is a passion side project I built with a developer friend — a simple, lighthearted app that helps users track their bowel movements in order to better understand their digestion and overall health. Our goal: make poop tracking easy, helpful, and even a little fun.

My role I am the sole UX/UI designer on this project, responsible for the end-to-end design process:
  • Conducting design research and competitive analysis
  • Defining key user needs and app features
  • Creating user flows, wireframes, and the complete UI
  • Crafting a clean, minimal interface that supports daily use
Key Design Considerations
  • Simplicity first: The app had to be extremely easy to use — one-handed interaction, few screens, and quick recording.
  • Light humor, serious utility: The tone is playful, but the data can be important — we had to strike the right balance.
  • User habits: Users may open the app while in the bathroom — so speed and readability were key.

Core Features
  • Timer on landing screen: Start tracking instantly with a large, floating action button.
  • Log bowel movement results with custom tags like texture, time, and notes.
  • Tips & articles section with digestible content (pun intended) about gut health — perfect for in-the-moment reading.
  • Calendar view for spotting trends over time.

Journey Mapping I created a simplified journey map to identify the most important user moments — such as needing to log an entry quickly or casually browse health tips — and designed a minimal flow with no unnecessary steps.

Result
  • Improved usability: User testing with friends and wellness community members showed that people were able to understand and use the app within seconds, even without a tutorial.
  • High engagement on key screens: The landing screen timer feature was the most-used, confirming our assumption that users wanted quick access during “go time.”
  • User delight: Feedback highlighted how the playful design and humor made an awkward topic feel approachable, encouraging daily use.
  • Scalable design system: I created a flexible UI system that can be easily expanded for future features like reminders, trend visualizations, and integration with Apple Health.
  • Independent end-to-end execution: This project demonstrates my ability to take an idea from napkin sketch to final high-fidelity prototype — solo, with collaboration only on development.
